#7 - Marian ACHA Hockey Reaches Regional Championship
For a second straight year, the Marian ACHA hockey team earned a spot in the national tournament and came one win away from earning a regional championship.
The Sabre put together another stellar season in 2017-18 finishing with a 19-6-1 overall record to go with a 14-2-0 mark in NCHL action. The Sabres finished second in conference, only behind Aurora, and qualified for the Hap Cup Championship where they were defeated by Aurora. This earned Marian a spot in the central regional where Marian went on to open the national tournament with a 2-1 victory over Iowa State. In the regional championship, the Sabres were defeated by host Lindenwood (Mo.) coming up just one game short of a regional championship.
Marian put a total of seven student-athletes on all-conference lists behind Paul Kinder who not only earned a first team all-conference nod but became the program's first all-american earning a spot on the second team. Earning second team all-conference honors was Jake Weldon and Dan Roe and Fredrik Radbjer, while Colin Wilson and Brandon Mills were named honorable mention selections. Dan Liberko rounded out the group with a second team All-Rookie honor.
As a defenseman, Kinder not only led the Sabres in scoring but finished eighth in the conference for scoring, despite playing eight games fewer than many of the teams in the conference. The junior scored 11 goals with 27 assists for 38 points in only 24 games for a 1.6 points per game average. Radbjer was strong all season long in goal for the Sabres and went on to finish third in nation with a 1.77 goals against average recording a 9-3-0 record and three shutouts. In total, he would make 385 saves only allowing 23 goals for a .944 save percentage.
