FOND DU LAC - Sophomore Zachariah Sandoval of Marian University baseball and freshman Peyton Loesch of Marian University softball earned the final Sabre of the Month awards for the 2017-18 athletic year.
Sandoval (Santee, Calif.) closed out his sophomore campaign leading the Sabres with 16.0 innings pitched in a pair of starts to close out the 2018 season. The right-hander recorded a 1.69 earned run average in his two starts earning him back-to-back Player of the Week awards, his second and third of the season. Sandoval had a particularly strong finish to the regular season with a complete game win over Edgewood where he only allowed one earned run and struck out seven. Sandoval closed out the year with 66.0 innings pitched with a 1.91 earned run average with 47 strikeouts, all of which led the Sabres. He also had four complete games during the season and finished the year with a 2.35 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Loesch (Bolingbrook, Ill.) had an especially big weekend at the plate as she led the Sabres at the NACC Tournament. Loesch hit .625 over the weekend with five hits in eight at bats and also drew three walks for a .727 on base percentage. The freshman also slugged .750 and drove in a pair of runs along with scoring once. In the circle, Loesch tossed the final inning in an elimination game against Wisconsin Lutheran to earn her second save on the year. Loesch went on to earn NACC Freshman of the Year honors in her first season as a Sabre and was second on the squad with a .431 batting average. She closed out her freshman campaign drawing a team-high 19 walks during the year leading her to a team-best .519 on base percentage and drove in 27 runs, second on the squad. Loesch also tossed the second-most innings with 59.2 as she went on to a 6-4 record with a pair of complete games in 21 appearances, 10 of which were starts.
