FOND DU LAC - More hockey is headed to Fond du Lac as the Marian University athletic department has announced the addition of an ACHA Division III hockey program.
"We are proud to announce the addition of another hockey team to our slate of sports here at Marian," commented director of athletics Jason Bartelt. "With the recent success we have had on the ice, especially from our ACHA Division II program, the addition of another ACHA team is very exciting."
This becomes the second ACHA team Marian sponsors, joining the ACHA Division II team who is currently in their third season of action and has made the national tournament in their first two seasons of existence. The schedule and postseason will be similar to Division II with the main difference being the regions. At Division II, the regions are split into central, northeast, southeast, and west, while the Division III level is split into Atlantic, north, Pacific, and south. The Sabres will join the north region of ACHA Division III, which currently has 27 teams ranging from as large as the University of Michigan to as small as Washtenaw Community College.
As a whole, ACHA Division III consists of approximately 140 teams with 10 conferences. A total of 16 teams are able to qualify for the national tournament with the tournament set up in a similar manner to ACHA Division II.
The Sabres have also announced the hiring of Tom Glomski to serve as the first head coach for the program. Glomski is a Marian alumn who played for the Sabres from 2010-2014. As a Sabre, Glomski recorded 14 points in 54 games with his best season coming his sophomore year where he scored nine goals. Marian would boast a 57-42-7 record during his career including a 19-8-0 mark in his freshman season.
"It's exciting to be back with the Marian University hockey program," commented Glomski. "The NCAA and ACHA Division II hockey teams have had a lot of success over the past couple of years and I look forward to continuing that success with the ACHA Division III program."
Head men's NCAA hockey coach Zach Gaynor was an assistant coach with the Sabre men's hockey program when Glomski was a student-athlete and said, "Having an all alumni hockey staff is something that we take a lot of pride in here at Marian. I couldn't be happier with the hiring of Tom and for him to continue the winning tradition and culture of success he had as a player in his new role as the bench boss of our ACHA Division III program. We are excited to continue to grow our hockey brand at Marian and Tom will do an excellent job getting our newest program underway."
The ACHA Division III team will begin play during the 2019-2020 academic year joining men's and women's bowling who will also be competing in their inaugural seasons during that time. With the addition, Marian athletics now sponsors 24 total athletic teams; 21 NCAA sponsored teams and three club sports.
