No. 5 ACHA Sabres split with RMU to close out first half

CHICAGO - No. 5 Marian University men's ACHA hockey (12-3, 7-1 NCHL) suffered their first conference loss in the opener of a series against Robert Morris by a 4-2 final before salvaging a split with a 5-0 win.

In game one Friday night the first period was almost a scoreless affair. However, with 51 seconds remaining in the period No. 16 RMU got on the board with a power-play goal by Jordan DeYoung, assisted by AJ Kapcheck and Jack Warren. As a result, after one period of play RMU led 1-0.

No. 5 Marian University answered with their own power play goal 5:30 into period number two. Credited with the goal was Lonnie Clary and assists went to Collin Klein and Andrew Guzman. Lucas Stover would put RMU back up by one at the 12:11 mark with a power play goal off an assist by Michael Melka. RMU opened up a two-goal lead with another power play goal 2:24 later when Ryan Marciniak found the back of the net, with an assist going to Lucas Stover. Just over four minutes later Marian would cut the RMU lead back down to one on Paul Kinder Li's goal, assisted by Tanner Pagendam and Jake Weldon. With only one second left in the second period, DeYoung scored his second goal of the game and put RMU up 4-2.

The third period was a defensive battle as there was no scoring and only 13 shots made it to the net between the two teams. At the end of regulation, RMU came out with a 4-2 victory.

In net for RMU and earning the victory was John Floro. In 60 minutes of work he stopped 46 of the 48 shots Marian put on net. In a losing effort for Marian, Fredrik Radbjer turned away 23 of the 27 shots he faced.

Scoring in game two got off to a faster start than in game one as Marian's Tanner Duffney scored with only 2:37 having elapsed in the period, with an assist by Bryton Tomko. A power play goal by Tanner Pagendam, assisted by Duffney and Collin Klein, increased Marian's lead to 2-0 with 9:34 remaining in the period. The rest of the period would be scoreless and Marian went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

A second power play goal by Marian would increase their lead to three at the 11:21 mark of the second period. The power play goal was scored by Nicholas Guidry with assists by Duffney and Paul Kinder Li. RMU did all they could to try and put one past Marian goaltender Justin Davidson, out shooting Marian 21-7, but he was up to the task and kept RMU off the board. Period two came to an end with Marian up 3-0.

Marian would make the score 4-0 when Lonnie Clary put one past John Floro of RMU at the 5:35 mark of the third. Assisting on the even strength goal was Andrew Guzman and Pagendam. The final goal of the game came off of the stick of Clary, with assists to Pagendam and Mile Giorgione, while on the power play and provided the final differential in a 5-0 victory for Marian.

Earning the shutout for Marian was Davidson through a 37 save effort. Credited for the loss was Floro, he turned aside 23 of the 28 shots he faced on the night.
