TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Michael Pappas' walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 9th gave the Marian baseball team (4-6, 0-0 NACC) an exciting 13-12 win over Illinois Institute of Technology in their finale at the Tucson Invitational.
IIT opened the scoring in the top half of the first but the game would prove to be an offensive battle.
The Sabres evened it at one in the bottom of the frame when Pappas singled home senior Cole Miklavcic.
The Scarlet Hawks plated an unearned run off of sophomore starter Jordan Bock in the top of the second and that's how it stay until the bottom of the third when Marian's bats got hot. The Sabres collected six straight hits in the inning, which led to four runs. Seniors Tyler Thompson and Tommy Dugandzic each had an RBI singles and Pappas drove in a pair with a double in the frame.
IIT added single runs in the 4th and 5th to cut the Sabre lead to 5-4.
Marian put together a five run 5th that included RBI singles by freshman Trey Johnson and Thompson sandwiched around a three run double by Miklovcic.
The Scarlet Knights batted around scoring seven runs in the 7th to take an 11-10 advantage after their frame was up and added one more in the 8th to take a 12-10 lead.
Marian scored a pair in the bottom of the 8th to pull even as Miklovcic scored all the way from first when the IIT right fielder misplaced a Thompson single. Thompson then scored on a Michael Pappas sac fly to right.
IIT put a pair of runners on in the 9th but were left scoreless when Johnson made a running catch in the right center field cap to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the 9th, the Sabres loaded the bases and won it on Pappas' single to left.
Sophomore Conner Nelson (1-0) picked up the win for Marian. Dylan Corsi (0-1) took the loss for IIT.
The Sabres will next travel to Wittenberg for a doubleheader Saturday, March 2 at noon (CDT) in non-conference action.
