DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Marian University men's basketball (3-8, 1-5 NACC) ended a seven-game skid defeating LaGrange 76-70 to close out the Daytona Beach Shootout.
After a back-and-forth start, LaGrange would use a quick 9-0 run to take a 27-21 lead with 2:56 left in the first half for what proved to be their largest lead of the game. The Sabres were able to close out the half strong, however, going on a 10-2 spurt capped off by a three-pointer from sophomore Matt Shaw to give Marian a 31-29 advantage heading into the break.
The second half saw each the two squads battle tightly before the Sabres were able to take the lead for good with a 12-2 run that put Marian ahead 58-53 with 3:47 left to play. The Panthers were able to trim the Marian lead to one, but the Sabres scoring nine unanswered to go ahead 68-58 in the final minute. Marian then iced the game going 8-10 from the charity stripe in the final 36 seconds to earn the victory.
The offense for Marian would shoot 14-30 (.467) from the field in the second half including 6-14 (.429) from three-point land to secure the win.
Junior Will Polczynski and sophomore Tavaris McCullough each had 12 points to pace the Sabre offense. Senior Tyrese Pinson put together another strong line scoring nine points with five assists and a steal.
Marian opens the second half of the season at home hosting Dominican Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. in NACC action.
