Sabre men's hockey upsets No. 5 UW-Stevens Point

Derek Thorogood looks for options.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (3-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHA) used a two goal opening period to defeat No. 5 UW-Stevens Point 3-1 in non-conference action.

The Sabres struck for a pair of goals in a span of 18-seconds late in the first period to take a two goal lead into the first intermission.  Senior Gianni Mangone started the quick spurt with his second goal of the year at the 17:47 mark, assists to junior Nick Monfils and senior Hunter Stewart, with fellow senior Derek Thorogood following him with his fourth goal of the year, assist to Monfils.

The Pointers would cut the deficit in half 23-seconds into the second period as part of a period that saw UWSP outshoot Marian 9-3.  Marian was able to fend off the Pointers, however, when senior Cole McCaig provided an insurance goal at the 14:35 mark, his first tally of the season, with assists to sophomore Clay Cross and junior Lonnie Clary.

Offense was at a premium as UWSP would only outshoot the Sabres 23-16.  Thorogood led the MU offense with a team-high four shots.

Sophomore Hunter Vorva (3-2-0) had another strong performance in net for the Sabres stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced.

Marian closes out the weekend when they travel to UW-Stout for a 7 p.m. puck drop tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 18.
