Marian men's hockey drops special teams filled game

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - In a game that saw four power play goals and an empty net goal, Marian University men's hockey (6-3-1, 3-3-1 NCHA) fell to No. 1 St. Norbert by a 4-1 final.

The Sabres would trail 2-0 entering the third period but were able to connect on a power play opportunity at the 3:26 mark of the period to cut the deficit in half.  Junior Nick Monfils scored his second goal in as many games with assists to his senior linemates Derek Thorogood and Hunter Stewart.

The Green Knights opened the scoring in the first period after a 5-on-3 goal and one man-advantage goal separated by 33 seconds.  St. Norbert would score their third power play goal of the evening at the 5:54 mark to extend their lead back out to two before an empty net goal with 1:24 remaining sealed the win for the top-ranked Green Knights.

St. Norbert would go 3-10 on the power play with the Sabre penalty kill holding the Green Knights to only one goal on five power play opportunities in the final period.

Sophomore Hunter Vorva stood on his head most of the night making 31 saves on the 34 shots he faced.

Marian was out shot 35-28 in the defeat but had a strong second period where the Sabres held a 12-8 advantage in shots.  Senior Gianni Mangone had 10 shots on goal to lead Marian, while sophomore Chris Deprez had a team-best nine faceoff wins.

Marian closes out the first half of the season when they host UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Dec. 9 for an 8 p.m. puck drop.
