MILWAUKEE - The 2017-18 Marian University men's hockey (10-3-1, 5-3-0 NCHA) squad became the fastest team in program history to reach 10 wins after a 3-1 win at No. 13 MSOE.
The win was the second time in as many weekends the Sabres were able to defeat the ranked Raiders.
Marian dominated action in the opening two periods as they out shot the Raiders 31-18. The Sabres went on to finish with a 39-25 advantage in shots with sophomore Hunter Vorva putting together yet another strong performance with 24 saves.
Junior Nick Monfils opened the scoring just 1:01 into the game when he lit the lamp for the second time this season with assists to seniors Derek Thorogood and Hunter Stewart. Stewart then lit the lamp 5:16 into the second period for his team-high ninth score in what proved to be the game-winner. Monfils and sophomore Brock Weston assisted the goal.
Thorogood then gave the top Sabre line their third goal of the game at the 14:17 mark of the second period with assists to his linemates; Stewart and Monfils. The Raiders scored just 29 seconds into the third period but the Sabres were able to hold off any thoughts of an MSOE come back.
Marian remains on the road to take on No. 1 St. Norbert Friday, January 12 at 7 p.m. from Cornerstone Ice Center.
