FOND DU LAC, Wis. - No. 13 Marian University men's hockey (19-6-1, 12-6-0 NCHA) had a strong showing to open the Harris Cup defeating St. Scholastica 4-1.
The Sabres outshot the Saints 34-21 for the game including a 29-15 margin through two periods. Sophomore Hunter Vorva stopped 20 shots in the game as he added to his single-season record for wins. Vorva also helped lead a penalty kill unit that held St. Scholastica scoreless on seven opportunities.
Senior Gianni Mangone helped lead the Sabres as he netted a pair of goals. Mangone opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 7:10 into the game and then iced the game in the third period lighting the lamp at the 15:58 mark with assists to fellow seniors Hunter Stewart and Curtis Lewington. Mangone now sits at nine goals on the season with the pair of scores.
The Sabre power play went 1-5 (.200) in the game with junior Nick Monfils scoring the extra-man goal, which also proved to be the game-winner. Senior Derek Thorogood and Lewington assisted the goal that came at the 14:46 mark of the opening period and was the fifth goal of the season for Monfils.
Marian closes out the Harris Cup Quarterfinals against St. Scholastica tomorrow, Saturday, February 17, with the puck dropping at 5 p.m. With a win or a tie, Marian would move on to the NCHA North Championship game, but if the Saints win the two squads will play a 20-minute mini-game immediately after the conclusion of the regular game.
