SUPERIOR, Wis. - No. 13/15 Marian University men's hockey (7-5-2, 5-2-0 NCHA) dropped the championship game of the UW-Superior Showdown falling to No. 10/12 Trinity by a 4-1 final.
The Bantams opened the scoring just 1:16 into the game but the Sabres responded to tie the game. While on the power play, freshman Nathan Walker would light the lamp from the top of the right circle for his second goal of the season with 13:00 left to play in the first period. Senior Jake Howie and fellow freshman Salvatore Scalise each assisted the goal, which proved to be the only Sabre tally.
Trinity would take the lead for good 5:07 later before netting a pair of goals in the second period to set the final.
The Sabre penalty kill had a strong game holding the Bantam power play, which ranked third in the country coming into the game, to one man-advantage goal on eight opportunities. One of the Marian penalty kills came on a major penalty during the third period.
Junior Hunter Vorva (6-4-2) turned away 44 shots in goal for the Sabres including all 14 shots he saw in the final period.
Marian returns home to take on MSOE Thursday, January 3 for a 4 p.m. puck drop in NCHA action.
