MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Marian University men's lacrosse (7-2, 3-1 MLC) scored six unanswered goals to defeat Cornell 16-14 in MLC action.
The Sabres had a strong start in the first quarter taking an early 5-2 lead behind a pair of goals from sophomore Garrett Houlihan. Freshmen Patrick Langeluttig and Colt Robertson each scored in the second quarter but the Rams bounced back to take a slim 8-7 lead into halftime.
Cornell added to their lead in the third quarter outscoring Marian 5-3 and extended their lead to four goals with the first goal of the fourth quarter. From there, however, the Sabre offense was able to dominate scoring the next six goals over a span of 9:48. Five different Marian scorers found the back of the net in the rally with sophomore Nick Klotz being the lone Sabre to score twice.
This rally held up as the Marian defense held the Rams scoreless over the final 13:33 of the game to set the final at 16-14.
The Marian special teams held Cornell to only four man-up goals over the course of 13 opportunities while also scoring a man-down goal.
Klotz and Houlihan each had four goals to pace the offense, while Robertson had a multi-assist game. Defensively, sophomore Austin Finley caused a pair of turnovers and freshman Johnny Estrada made seven saves on 21 shots to earn the win in goal.
Marian is scheduled to return home and take on Aurora Saturday, April 6 for a 4 p.m. start in MLC action.
