REDLANDS, Calif. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team finished 0-2 at the Redlands Winter Classic after a narrow, 46-40, defeat to Manchester University this evening, Dec. 29.
Rissa Cerveny was the lone Sabre in double figures with 11 points, while Amelia Mirsberger and Sarah Albert each tallied nine points. Mirsberger added six rebounds and six steals in the effort. With the win, Manchester improved to 4-7 on the season, while Marian fell to 3-8 with the loss.
Marian held a slim lead early on, taking a 7-3 advantage in the first six minutes of play, but the Spartans quickly put together a 9-2 run to jump in front 15-9 with 6:54 to go before halftime and would never look back. The Spartans would lead 24-16 at the break.
The difference in the game could be attributed to Manchester's 10 second-chance points on 11 offensive rebounds. Overall, the Spartans out-rebounded the Sabres, 48-32, in the contest.
Manchester led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Time ran short as a late Marian comeback cut the deficit to six points by the final horn.

The Sabres will return home and face Edgewood on the road this Wednesday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
