FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's basketball (2-19, 2-13 NACC) dropped a thriller to Alverno with a final score of 79-75.
The Sabres opened with a 9-3 lead and took that lead out to 18-11 with 1:55 left in the quarter. The Inferno rallied, however, in the final minutes going on an 11-2 run to take a 22-20 lead into the first break. Alverno extended their lead out to 28-23 before Marian used an 8-3 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 2:09 left to play in the half. The game was a seesaw battle the rest of the half with Alverno taking a 40-39 advantage into the half.
The largest lead in the third quarter proved to be a meager five-point lead for Alverno as the game stayed tight with the Inferno taking a 54-51 lead into the final quarter. The Inferno opened the final quarter with an 8-2 run to extend their lead out to 63-52 with 8:18 left to play. Marian managed to put together a 7-2 run late to cut their deficit down to 73-71 with 2:05 left to play. The Sabres were able to keep their deficit down to two points after a layup from freshman Paris Harris, but a pair of Inferno free throws with only two seconds left iced the game.
The Sabres finished with a 50-36 advantage in the paint and outrebounded the Inferno 49-33.
Harris put together a strong game finishing with a team-high 28 points and 14 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double. Senior Molly Magnus also posted a double-double adding 14 points with 10 rebounds and six assists. Off of the bench, junior Carley Wilson was able to chip in 13 points.
Marian remains on the road traveling to Aurora for a 7 p.m. tip Thursday, February 7.
