Marian women's hockey sweeps Northland to jump into sixth

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University women's hockey (7-16-0, 6-10-0 NCHA) jumped into playoff position defeating Northland 4-1 to secure a sweep of the LumberJills.

The Sabres netted the first four goals in a game that would determine which team controlled their own destiny for a spot in the NCHA Slaats Cup Playoffs.  Sophomore Ally Fox netted a pair of power play goals in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Juniors Jill Schneider and Nicole Niemi assisted the first goal, while senior Paige Johnson and freshman Jamie Henrickson assisted the second.

For the second game in a row, junior Alexis Peterson lit the lamp in the second period for her third goal of the year at the 18:52 mark.  Fellow junior Hailey Miller assisted the goal as the Sabres led 3-0 heading to the final period.

Sophomore Morgan Bolin netted her eighth goal of the year to open the third period with assists to Peterson and Miller to close out the Sabre scoring.  The 'Jills would end the shutout with a goal 1:43 following the Bolin goal but the Sabres were able to close out the game with a 4-1 final.

Marian held a hefty 36-22 advantage in shots with Fox recording a team-high five shots on frame.  Junior Lindsey Strainis had another strong game stopping 21 of the shots she faced and also led the penalty kill unit to two successful kills.

Peterson went a perfect 5-5 in the faceoff circle, while Miller went 8-3 and Johnson went 12-6.  Junior Natalie West also went 5-2 as Marian controlled 64.7-percent of draws.

The Sabre power play went 2-8 (.250) with multiple power play goals for only the fourth time this season.

Marian closes out the regular season hosting No. 4/7 Adrian Feb. 16-17.
