Transition goals lead Marian women's soccer past CUC

Olivia Meerdink tries to get past a defender.

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's soccer (5-6-0, 2-2-0 NACC) evened their conference record behind a 3-2 victory at home against Concordia Chicago.

The Sabres struck first with a pair of goals coming in a span of just 2:50.  Freshman Olivia Meerdink netted her eighth goal of the year with an assist to senior Karissa Preston. Preston sent a deep ball to Meerdink that she was able to create a one-on-one opportunity with and beat the keeper.  In nearly identical fashion, freshman Meghan Batzner sent a deep pass to senior Carley Schmit who was able to find the back of the net for the second time this year.

The Cougars would score late in the half to finish out a half that saw each team send nine shots.

The second half remained tight before Marian was able to convert a corner kick to add on to their lead.  After Preston sent the ball into the box, Batzner was able to find space and head the corner inside the left post for her second goal of the year and give MU a 3-1 lead.  The Cougars would score as the horn sounded to put the final at 3-2 and secure a Marian win.

The Sabres were outshot 16-14 for the game with Meerdink recording six shots.  In goal, freshman Amy Birner (2-0-0) would make five saves as she earned her second career victory.

Marian remains at home to take on MSOE Wednesday, Oct. 3 for a 7 p.m. kickoff from Smith Field.
