Volleyball Winless at IIAC Challenge

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The rocky road continued for the Marian University volleyball team this weekend at the Wisconsin Dells, as they went winless in the IIAC-NACC Challenge. The Sabres were battlers in each of their sets, but just couldn't find the winning combination.

In their opening match, Marian faced Buena Vista, losing in three sets 17-25, 16-25, and 23-25. Freshman Jordan Menges led the squad with 20 assists. Sophomore Casey Lamberty chipped in 12 digs to go along with her five kills.

Against Luther, the Sabres would again fall in three straight sets, 19-25, 20-25, and 20-25. In the second match of the weekend, freshman Katrina Jansen would provide 19 digs. Menges would add 16 assists and 10 digs. Lamberty would return with 13 digs and six kills.

Despite losing their first two matches, Marian returned to the court for a third match on Friday to try and bring a victory back to Fond du Lac. Their luck would not turn out, as Simpson won in three sets, 14-25, 18-25, and 18-25. Sophomore Anna Smit led the offense with 11 kills, while freshman Morgan Dercks added 10 assists. On the defensive side of things, Jansen and senior Ashley Zumbrock added 16 and 10 digs respectively.

To wrap up the weekend, Marian faced Central College on Saturday morning. Again, the Sabres would fight tooth and nail, but would come up short, losing in three sets, 24-26, 17-25, and 17-25. Jansen added 19 digs and Dercks contributed 12 assists and 12 digs.

The Sabres return to action this Tuesday as they will host Lake Forest at 7 p.m. Following the non-conference tilt, Marian will return to NACC play on Friday continuing their homestand, hosting Dominican. They'll have a quick turnaround as then they will face Alverno on Saturday morning in Milwaukee.
