FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University baseball (11-25, 5-13 NACC) rallied after an early deficit but fell to Ripon 5-4 in 11 innings from Herr-Baker Field.
Ripon jumped out early on the Sabres scoring a run in the first and a tallying a pair in the third for the early 3-0 lead. Marian cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single to left center from freshman Nick Bastien that scored sophomores Cole Clark and Jake Falish. The Sabres weren't done as they would take their first lead of the game in the next inning.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Falish would draw a free pass to bring in senior Tommy Dugandzic before a sacrifice fly from Clark scored Pappas to put MU ahead 4-3. The lead wouldn't last long, however, as in the next half-inning the RedHawks would score to tie the game.
The rest of the way was a pitching duel where freshman Tim Dziergas highlighted his stuff by striking out five consecutive batters. Ripon would strike first in extras with a wild pitch moving a runner over just before a two-out single put the RedHawks ahead 5-4 in the 11th. The Sabres would get a leadoff single from sophomore Travis Slywka who was sacrificed over by Bastien, but MU was unable to bring him in leading to the 5-4 final.
Bastien finished the game 3-5 with two runs batted in, while sophomore Brandon Knoke had a solid start going 5.0 innings only allowing three hits and a pair of earned runs while striking out seven.
Marian closes out the conference portion of their schedule hosting Dominican Saturday, May 6 for a noon twin bill.
