FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (2-6-0, 1-5-0 NCHA) outshot UW-Superior 38-21 and scored four power play goals en route to a 6-1 non-conference win.
Marian only needed 1:25 to take the first lead of the game when sophomore Gianni Mangone sent one from the point on the power play to the back of the net with assists to senior Derek Perl and junior Derek Thorogood. Sophomore Nick Monfils then lit the lamp on the power play a little over five minutes later with assists to junior Braden Crone and Scott Milnthorp, which proved to be the game-winner.
The YellowJackets would score with just under four minutes to cap off the scoring for a period that saw MU outshoot UW-Superior 16-3.
The Sabres continued to perform well on special teams scoring a pair of power play goals, while also netting an even strength goal in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Mangone scored his second power play goal of the night at the 4:48 mark, assists to junior Hunter Stewart and Perl, and Thorogood then added on to the Marian lead with Stewart adding another assist.
Just 37 seconds after the Thorogood goal, senior Cole McCaig lit the lamp for his first goal of the season with an assist to sophomore Thomas Fazio and Stewart. The Sabres were able to once again control the game in the second period outshooting UW-Superior 13-4.
Stewart then capped off a four-point night with the lone goal of the third period at the 16:26 mark. Thorogood and Crone assisted Stewart, which set the final at 6-1.
Senior Mike Baldwin played well in net earning his first victory of the season making 20 saves and holding UW-Superior 0-5 on the power play.
Marian hits the road next weekend to play Saint John's (Minn.) Saturday, Nov. 26 for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
