ROANOKE, Va. - Nick Monfils, formerly of Marian University men's hockey, has signed a professional contract with the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).
"During my time here at Marian, Nick has played a crucial role in our team's success playing on our top line both years," commented head coach Zach Gaynor. "His progression and focus on transitioning from playing a college style to more of a pro-style these last two years has paid off. Nick's character, work ethic, and his high skill level are all attributes that will make him a valuable addition to Roanoke. Roanoke has chosen not only an outstanding hockey player but an even better person. I will greatly miss watching him on the power play, watching him take over games, and seeing his smiling face in the locker room. He has truly earned this opportunity and I now look forward to following his professional career."
Monfils played in 104 games over his career with Marian scoring 22 goals with 40 assists for a total of 62 points. He closed out his career with nine game-winning goals putting him sixth in Marian history. On the power play, Monfils scored nine goals with multiple power play goals in the final three seasons of his career.
He opened his career with a six-point season as a freshman but his final three seasons saw him reach at least 16 points. As a sophomore, he skated in 26 games scoring seven goals, four of which were game-winners, with nine assists for a total of 16 points. In a road game at Northland that season, Monfils posted his first multi-point game assisting a pair of goals to go with the game-winning goal in a 5-3 win to secure a sweep.
He then put together his best season as a junior to help lead the Sabres to their first berth in the NCAA tournament. Monfils scored five goals that season and assisted another 18, single-season best, for a total of 23 points. He recorded at least one point in 15 of the 28 games he played that season with six multi-point games. Monfils was also able to produce his first three-assist game in the season opener against Trine. The Oshkosh, Wis. native then closed out his career with a 17-point season coming from seven goals and 10 assists. Monfils had four more multi-point games including another three-assist performance in a 4-1 home victory over Aurora. He also had a multi-point game with a goal and an assist on the road in a tie against then-ranked No. 6/8 UW-Eau Claire.
Monfils becomes the third Sabre from the Marian men's hockey class of 2019 to sign a professional contract and is the ninth Marian skater since 2016 to go pro. He is the sixth forward since 2016 to earn an opportunity professionally.
