Marian men's lacrosse holds off late Dubuque rally 11-8

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's lacrosse (5-2, 1-1 MLC) returned home to defeat Dubuque 11-8 in non-conference action.

The Sabres opened the game with a goal just 22 seconds in as sophomore Tommy Gerlach scored with an assist to freshman Patrick Langeluttig.  Sophomore Nick Klotz and Connor Houlihan would also score in the first quarter to give Marian a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Marian dominated the second quarter forcing 12 Spartan turnovers and outscoring Dubuque 5-1.  The Sabres had five different goal scorers for the quarter with Klotz earning multiple points as Marian took an 8-3 lead into halftime.  

The defenses came to play in the third quarter but Dubuque would cut their lead down to 9-5 heading into the final quarter.  Houlihan scored the lone Marian goal for the quarter while the Sabres had a man-advantage, another assist to Langeluttig.

Dubuque would score a pair of goals in a span of 1:34 to make things interesting in the final quarter but goals from freshmen Colt Robertson and Finn Maloney held up as Marian closed out the 11-8 victory.

Four different Sabres had multi-goal games with Houlihan scoring three times and Klotz posting a three-point game.  The Sabre defense held Dubuque to 17-30 on clear attempts forcing 31 turnovers overall.  Houlihan went on to force four turnovers along with his hat trick, while Gerlach and freshman Vincent Mercadante each had seven ground balls.

In goal, freshman Johnny Estrada held Dubuque 0-3 on man-up situations making nine saves on 17 shots to earn the win.

Marian hits the road in their return to MLC action traveling to Concordia Chicago Saturday, March 30 for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
