ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second time this season, Marian University men's lacrosse (10-4, 6-3 MLC) rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing entering the quarter to defeat Northwestern (Minn.) 18-16.
After the Eagles scored the first two goals of the opening quarter, Marian scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 7-3 lead. UNW answered with a goal to end the quarter to put the tally at 7-4 at the first break. The Eagles then outscored Marian 7-3 in the second quarter with a 5-0 spurt to take an 11-10 halftime lead.
Neither team was able to gain ground in the third quarter as each squad scored three goals to put the score at 14-13 heading to the final stanza. Northwestern expanded their lead with the first two goals of the fourth quarter to put the score at 16-13. Marian then rallied to score five consecutive goals to earn the crucial MLC win.
Sophomore Nick Klotz paced the offense with a team-high six goals, while freshman Finn Maloney added four goals. Klotz also led the team with six ground balls with freshman Vincent Mercadante also grabbing six ground balls after going 12-18 on face-offs.
Marian returns home to take on Beloit Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in their final home game of the season. The winner of the game clinches the final spot in the MLC tournament.
