RIPON, Wis. - A goal in the 14th minute proved to be the lone tally as Marian University men's soccer (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NACC) defeated Ripon 1-0 in non-conference action.
The Sabres would fire three goals on frame with a pair of corner kicks before freshman Emanuel Acosta found the back of the net for the first time in his career. Acosta went to the upper right corner for his tally and was assisted by senior Kyle Klusendorf. Marian went on to outshoot the Red Hawks 13-6 for the half with eight of their shots being on goal.
The second half was a different story as Ripon looked for the equalizer. The Red Hawks ended up with eight shots to only two for the Sabres but junior Kevin Cervantes (1-0-0) was up to the task completing a clean sheet with six saves.
Marian ended the game with a slim 15-14 advantage in shots led by sophomore Brandon Mancini who finished with a game-high four shots, three of which were on goal.
The Sabres have now beaten the Red Hawks in back-to-back meetings at Ripon and improve to 6-4-0 in the all-time series.
Marian heads north for a pair of games opening at Finlandia Saturday, Sept. 7 for a noon kick-off.
