Sabre men's soccer opens turf with 2-2 draw versus Lawerence

Marian celebrates a goal.

FOND DU LAC - Playing on the renovated turf surface of Smith Field for the first time ever, Marian University men's soccer (3-3-1, 0-0-0 NACC) tied Lawrence 2-2 in non-conference action.

The Sabres started well scoring the first two goals of the game and taking that advantage into halftime.  Freshman Chase Hayden was able to score his first career goal off of a corner kick from junior Cade Klusendorf in the 21st minute before senior Chris Nelson headed in a pass from fellow senior Josiah Kusik in the 42nd minute, his first of the season.

Marian controlled the pace for most of the second half holding the Vikings to only two shots, but Lawrence made the most of their shots scoring on both opportunities.  The Sabres outshot Lawrence 9-2 in the second half but were unable to break the 2-2 tie forcing overtime.

Each team was provided one quality opportunity in extra time, with Marian having a shot saved in the first overtime and Lawrence hitting the crossbar in the second, but neither team found the back of the net leading to the 2-2 tie.

Marian finished with a 19-9 advantage in shots led by sophomore Brandon Mancini who had a match-high six shots.  Junior Kevin Cervantes (2-2-1) made a pair of saves in the first half and finished as the keeper of record.

Marian opens NACC play traveling to Edgewood Wednesday, Sept. 25 for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
