SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Marian University men's volleyball (3-3, 0-0 NACC) opened the Wittenberg 'Power Weekend' sweeping Penn State-Altoona and Wittenberg in straight sets.
The Sabres hit .327 in their first match of the weekend sweeping the Lions with set scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-22. The first pair of sets saw Marian hit .367 and .387, respectively with 28 kills and only five errors. The second set especially was strong for the Sabre offense with zero attacking errors.
Senior Aaron Wendels paced the Sabres with a match-high 14 kills and .206 hitting percentage, while junior Jon Smallpage hit .348 with 11 kills. Wendels also added 11 digs for his first double-double of the season. From the back row, junior Cullen Liberski had another productive match with a match-high 15 kills.
Marian held a huge advantage at the net with 7.5 blocks with Smallpage recording a solo block and three assisted blocks. Junior Ben Walter and sophomore Jacob DeGroot each had three block assists at the net as well.
Junior Joey Dittman had 33 assists to go with three service aces, six digs and two block assists.
The second match of the day against the host Tigers saw a similarly strong performance from the Marian offense as the Sabres swept Wittenberg with set scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-20. The Sabres hit .245 for the match and hit consistently throughout the match.
Wendels and Smallpage once again led the offense with Wendels recording a match-high 15 kills and hitting .355, while Smallpage hit .407 with 13 kills. Liberski once again paced the back row with a match-high 13 digs.
The Sabre block was also strong again as each Sabre in the starting lineup recording at least one block assist for a total of 7.0 blocks. Smallpage led the front row with four block assists.
Marian closes out the weekend taking on No. 12 Mount St. Joseph at noon and Elmira at 2 p.m. from Wittenberg.
