Flurry of second half goals lifts Marian past Finlandia

ASHLAND, Wis. - Marian University women's soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NACC) used five second half goals to defeat Finlandia 6-0 in their season opener.

In a game that saw the Sabres send 35 shots on frame, Marian was able to handily defeat Finlandia to open the season.  Junior Briana Pawlowski opened the scoring at the 15:58 mark for her third career goal.  Freshman Alicia Balken assisted the goal as she would for the next two as part of a five-point game.

Junior Alexis Peterson found the back of the net to start the second half and a little under six minutes later it was senior Jessica Retzlaff who put the Sabres ahead 3-0.

MU closed out the game strong with three newcomers finding the back of the net in the final eight minutes of the game.  Junior Reilly Louko scored an unassisted goal before assisting freshman Charity Hertel a little under two minutes later to put the Sabres ahead 5-0.  Balken closed out the scoring to cap off her five-point game with an unassisted goal with only 16 seconds remaining in the game.

Junior Danielle Deltgen (1-0-0) earned her first career shutout in goal for the Sabres.

Marian closes out their trip to Ashland, Wis. with a 1 p.m. game against Northland tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 3.
