Quick start leads Sabre women's soccer past Muskies

Charity Hertel controls the ball.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University women's soccer (4-5-0, 1-2-0 NACC) scored four goals in the first half of a 5-0 win over Lakeland.

Junior Reilly Louko opened the scoring when the Sabres put together some great passes to put her wide open in front of the net.  Junior Karissa Preston sent the ball in from deep and a great redirect pass from fellow junior Carley Schmit set Louko up for her sixth goal on the year.

Preston then netted her second goal of the year when she went far post off of a rebound just three minutes later.  Freshman Shannon Coughlin was the next Sabre to find the box score when she headed in a pass from Louko in the 23rd minute for her fifth goal on the year.  Senior Jessica Retzlaff closed out the first half scoring when a scramble in front of the net led to her firing a shot to the upper portion of the far post for her second goal on the year.

Sophomore Allyson VanZeeland was in the right place at the right time in the 60th minute when a Lakeland clear attempt deflected off of her and past the keeper for her third goal on the year to close out the scoring.

Marian sent 14 shots on goal with 10 different Sabres sending a shot on frame.  The Sabre defense on the other end of the pitch, only allowed one Lakeland shot to reach net.

Sophomore Alyssa Jones (1-3-0) earned her first career win as she combined with fellow junior Danielle Deltgen for the shutout.

Marian returns to action when they travel to Concordia Chicago Sunday, Oct. 1 for a 3:15 p.m. kick off in NACC action.
