Marian volleyball ends homestand with win

Jamie Schrauth goes up for an attack.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University women's volleyball (5-10, 1-3 NACC) ended a six-match homestand defeating Beloit with set scores of 29-27, 16-25, 25-21 and 25-19.

The first set was back-and-forth with neither side able to maintain a lead larger than three points.  Beloit would record a better hitting percentage than Marian in the set but in the end a kill from senior Amber Baker and junior Alexandra Meidl clinched the opening set win.

Beloit jumped out early on the Sabres scoring the first six points of the second set and were able to cruise from there to tie the match.  The third set opened similarly to the first with Marian trailing 7-5 before a 9-1 run put the Sabres up 14-8 and shifted the momentum the rest of the match.  Beloit would cut that lead in half but a quick 5-2 run near the end of the set and a kill from freshman Jenna Moehn helped seal the third set victory.

Looking to finish things off, Marian jumped all over the Buccanneers going on a 13-5 run to open the fourth set.  From there it was smooth sailing as Marian went on to record a team-high 13 kills in the set and cruised to the four-set win.

Baker finished with a double-double recording 40 assists and a match-high 16 digs.  On the offensive side, freshman Cheyenne Henson had a match-high 14 kills followed by Meidl who had 12.  The Sabres totaled 10 service aces, the first time they recorded double-digit aces since Sept. 16, led by freshman Jamie Schrauth who had four.

Marian will next travel to Concordia Chicago for a 7 p.m. first serve Friday, Oct. 6.
