ROCKFORD, Ill. - Marian University women's volleyball (8-13, 3-6 NACC) won their second straight match defeating Rockford with set scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-12 and 25-18.
The Sabre offense opened fast with a .226 hitting percentage in the opening set. Marian trailed 18-14 to start the first set but a 10-0 run from the Sabres set MU up for a first set win. Rockford rallied in the second set to even the sets as RU hit .219.
In a crucial third set, the Marian defense stepped up holding Rockford to a -.333 hitting percentage. The Sabres were also able to build momentum at the end of the set scoring the final eight points of the set. A 10-10 tally opened the fourth set, but the Sabres then went on a 9-4 run to take a 19-14 lead allowing MU to cruise to the match win.
The Sabre offense was led by freshmen Cheyenne Henson and Jamie Schrauth who each had a match-high 12 kills. The 12 kills for Henson was part of a double-double as she also recorded 10 digs. Senior Amber Baker also had a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs.
In defense, sophomore Jenna Skroski led the back row with a team-high digs. The Sabre front row had a big night as sophomore Kaitlyn Kelley had two solo blocks and five block assists, while junior Alexandra Meidl and freshman Jenna Moehn each had five block assists.
Marian travels to Madison, Wis. tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 21, where the Sabres will take on Edgewood at noon and North Central (Minn.) at 2 p.m.
