LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Marian University women's volleyball (0-3, 0-0 NACC) opened the season traveling to Lake Forest for the Forester Invitational.
The Sabres competed in three matches over the course of the invite falling to Loras in four sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-27, 25-22) before being swept by St. Mary's (Ind.) (25-14, 25-17, 25-16) on the opening day. The Sabres then closed out the invite against host Lake Forest falling in four sets (17-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11) once again.
In the opener against the DuHawks, the Sabres were able to force a fourth set but the offense had a tough time getting started the entire match. Freshman Monica Dreifuerst had a strong start to her career at Marian producing a double-double behind 12 kills and 11 digs. Senior Sara Komosa also had 11 digs in the defeat, while fellow senior Amber Yahr had 23 assists to go with 11 digs.
A similar story happened in their second match of the day against St. Mary's (Ind.) with the offense having a tough time getting started once again. Yahr produced another double-double with 11 digs and 13 assists, while senior Jenna Skroski paced the back row with a match-high 16 digs. Dreifuerst once again led the offense with seven kills with fellow freshman Caelan Tourdot adding five kills.
The Sabres started strong against Lake Forest recording 15 kills in the first set en route to a 25-17 win, but the Foresters rallied to take the next three sets. Dreifuerst posted her second double-double of the weekend in the defeat with 10 kills to go with 14 digs. Sophomore Hanah Walther paced the offense with 12 kills off of a .409 hitting percentage. Skroski put together her best performances of the weekend with a match-high 27 digs to go with three service aces. Yahr also had another strong match posting 16 digs with 32 assists.
Marian hits the road Wednesday, Sept. 4 for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Lawrence before traveling to Denver, Colo. for the Wildcat Invitational.
