GLENDALE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team clinched the sixth and final spot in the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference tournament after defeating Alverno College in the fall regular season finale, 7-2, at Nicolet High School in Glendale on Sunday.
The Sabres secured victories in four out of the six singles match-ups and each of their three doubles contests en route to the victory. Marian improves to 8-6 overall, 5-6 in the NAC while Alverno falls to 4-10 (4-7 NAC).
Three singles matches needed three sets to decide including
Alyssa Wittchow's win over Alverno's Joanna Stanula at \#4 singles. Wittchow took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 5-7. She responded with a swift 10-6 win in the third set.
Rebecca Heczko and
Sarah Brooker fell victim in the other two three set singles matches, but
Ann Goyke,
Brynn Hartzell and
Chelsey Will picked up the slack by cruising to straight set wins for the Royal Blue and White.
The 2012 NAC tournament will be slated for May 1-4 at Kohler Sports Core in Kohler, Wis. The Sabres will serve as the sixth seed and will be matched up against third-seeded Edgewood College. Fifth-seeded MSOE and fourth-seeded Dominican make up the other first round match-up. Top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran and second-seeded Concordia Wisconsin both received first round byes.
