Sabres Split with Dominican, Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team made it three wins in its last four Northern Athletics Conference duals after splitting a pair of matches today against hosts Dominican University and Concordia University Chicago, this afternoon, Sept. 15.

The Sabres opened the day with a morning match-up against Dominican, playing the Stars close, but falling in the end, 6-3. In the nightcap, Marian met Concordia Chicago and dominated in a 7-2 victory to improve to 4-6 overall, 4-3 in the NAC.

Against the Stars, the #1 doubles tandem of Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzel defeated DU, 8-3, to give the Sabres a leg up from the start. The #2 pairing of Reilly Connaher and Chelsey Will played a hard-fought match, but fell 8-6 before Sarah Brooker and Rachell Stoffel took an 8-3 loss at #3 doubles.

In singles, Connaher grabbed a straight sets win at #2 singles, defeating Emily Hereford, 7-5, 6-2. Hartzell then took challenging three-set win over Jillian Metcalf, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, at #3 singles. At #1 singles, Goyke looked poised to grab the win at the outset with a 6-1 first set victory. However, her counterpart, Rachel Taddy, fought back to grab the next two sets, 6-4, 7-5, to stun Goyke for the win.

The Sabres then dropped their final three singles matches in straight sets as Dominican played on to the 6-3 team victory.

Later in the day against Concordia Chicago, the Sabres were able to put the Dominican loss in the back of their minds. Despite dropping matches at #1 singles and #1 doubles, the Sabres were able to conquer the remaining seven matches for the dominating win.

All five singles wins were in straight sets, including matches by #4 Will, #5 Brooker, and #6 Stoffel. Marian remains in the mix for a spot in the NAC Team tournament, which takes the top-six finishers in the regular season standings. The Sabres currently sit in sixth place with four NAC matches remaining.
