FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Seniors Ann Goyke and Rachell Stoffel both won their respective singles match as they were celebrated prior to the match, but it wasn't enough to lead the Marian University women's tennis team to a victory over visiting Concordia University Chicago on Senior Day at Center Court Tennis Club, this afternoon, Oct. 4.

Goyke and Stoffell won handily at #1 and #3 singles, respectively, taking their opponents down in straight sets. However, the Sabres – lacking enough players – were forced to default at #6 singles and #3 doubles and wound up falling by a single point, 5-4.

The Cougars improved to 2-9 overall, 2-8 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with the win, while the Sabres fell to 4-9 (3-7 NACC).

Goyke and doubles partner, Brynn Hartzell, took care of business and looked to set the tone with an 8-2 victory over their counterparts at #1 doubles to begin the match.

Stoffell and Melissa Spannbauer pulled to within 5-4 at #2 doubles, but CUC's Emma Renteria and Elizabeth Steinhoff were able to pull away for the 8-5 victory.

Leading 2-1 heading into singles, Goyke pulled the Sabres even after her singles victory, but Hartzell dropped a heartbreaker at #2 singles, falling in three sets. Hartzell won a hard-fought first set, 7-6, but Renteria overcame the deficit to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 for the victory.

Spannbauer also fell in three sets, dropping the first and third after winning the second set, 6-4. Anna Jandecek made quick work of her #5 singles opponent, dropping just one point for the 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win.

The Sabres will close out the fall regular season with a non-conference home match against Roosevelt in a make-up from late September. The match is slated for 1 p.m. at Center Court Tennis Club.
