OAK PARK, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team saw its 2012-13 season come to an end as the fourth-seeded Dominican University Stars picked up a 5-3 victory in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference team tournament at Taylor Park, Monday, April 29.
The Sabres got off to a slow start by dropping two of three doubles matches to the Stars, but rebounded with victories from Reilly Connaher and Brynn Hartzell at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. However, in the end, Dominican was too much to overcome as they rallied to take #4, #5 and #6 singles to win the match and move on to the second round.
The Sabres finish the season 9-8 overall after finished the conference schedule with a 7-4 mark in earning the fifth seed in the tournament. The fourth-seeded Stars improve to 8-10 overall and will face top-seeded Edgewood College, Saturday.
The #1 doubles duo of Ann Goyke and Hartzell gave the Sabres an early advantage as they defeated Rachel Taddy/Emily Hereford by a score of 8-4.
The #2 team of Sarah Brooker and Connaher battled hard, but fell in a close 8-6 decision, while Rachell Stoffel and Karianne Hofstetter dropped an 8-2 match at #3 doubles.
At #2 singles, Connaher defeated Hereford 6-2, 6-1 to get the Sabres back in contention. Hartzell added to that with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #3 singles, but setbacks the rest of the way proved costly as the Sabres fell on the road.
Marian, which competed in its second straight conference team tournament and fifth in the last six years under Head Coach John Frausto, will return the majority of its roster in 2013-14.
