FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind a strong showing in singles play, the Marian University women's tennis team came away with an important 5-4 victory over Dominican University in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener at Fond du Lac High School this morning, Aug. 31.
The Sabres were slotted fifth in the 2013 NACC Preseason Poll – right behind the Stars – and avenged that slight as well as a 6-3 road loss from a season ago with today's victory. Dominican took two out of three doubles matches, but Marian stormed back to claim four-of-six singles matches for the team win.
The Sabres improved to 1-1 with the win, while the Stars dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The #1 doubles duo of Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzell handed their Dominican counterparts a convincing 8-3 defeat to lead off the competition, but the Stars came away with a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
In singles, Goyke led a furious comeback with a three-set victory over DU's Jillian Metcalf by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
At #2 singles, Hartzell staved off Marbeya Berner in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, while Robyn Cords overcame a first set loss to win at #3 singles 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
At #4 singles, Rachel Stoffell suffered a 6-1 loss in the first set before storming back for the win. She took the final two sets by scores of 6-2, 6-4 to defeat Natalie Bestler.
That was all the Sabres needed to record the victory, which was their first of the season.
Marian will be back in action this Wednesday, Sept. 4, taking on Lakeland at Buttermilk Creek Park at 4 p.m.
