AURORA, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team came away empty in a pair of matches against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foes as it dropped a 5-4 decision to Aurora and a 7-2 match to Benedictine at the Vaughan Athletic Center, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14.
In the morning match against the Eagles, the Sabres struggled to build momentum as Benedictine took two-of-three doubles and five-of-six singles matches on the day. Ahtyanna Lyons was the beneficiary at #6 singles as BU failed to provide a sixth player. At #2 doubles, Lyons and teammate Annie Jandacek won by default as well.
Against Aurora in the nightcap, the Sabres took two-of-three doubles matches as Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzell defeated their counterparts, 8-5. At #2 doubles, Melissa Spannbauer and Rachel Stoffell battled to the very end to earn the 9-8 win in extra points.
With a head of steam heading to singles, Goyke and Hartzell kept it going with straight sets victories. However, Aurora came storming back to take the final four singles matches and squeaked out the narrow 5-4 victory.
The Sabres will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 15, as they return home to host Mount Mary College at Fond du Lac High School. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
