MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind all-around solid play at singles and doubles, the Marian University women's tennis team pulled out a 6-3 victory over host Alverno College in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at McKinley Park his afternoon, Sept. 21.
All four singles victories for the Sabres were in straight sets, while the #1 doubles team of Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzell took care of their counterparts with ease. The win for Marian made it two in its last three outings.
The Sabres improved to 4-8 overall, 3-6 in the NACC with the win, while Alverno fell to 1-9 (1-6 NACC).
Goyke and Hartzell got things started with an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Marian's #2 doubles duo of Rachel Stoffell and Melissa Spanbauer followed suit with an 8-6 victory. After a default win by the Inferno at #3 doubles, it was up to singles play to seal the team victory for Marian.
Goyke turned in a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets win, followed by Hartzell's 6-4, 6-1 effort at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. Stoffell then recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win at #3 singles to give the Sabres the decisive win for the match.
Annie Jandacek earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at #5 singles to give the Sabres a 6-3 team win.
Marian will look to make it two straight wins when they host Concordia Wisconsin this Tuesday, Oct. 24. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Buttermilk Creek Park in Fond du Lac.
