ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – A victory over Rockford University earned a doubleheader split for the Marian University women's tennis team following a defeat to host Edgewood earlier in the day, Saturday, Sept. 7.
The Sabres triumphed past the Regents thanks to four singles wins and two out of three doubles victories in the nightcap.
Earlier in the day, Marian had traveled to Madison to take on Edgewood College and suffered a 9-0 defeat to the Eagles, but the resilient Sabres managed to bounce back with a much-needed victory.
Marian moved to 2-3 overall, 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with the split.
Ann Goyke, Robyn Cords and Melissa Spannbauer each recorded straight-set singles victories over their Regent counterparts. Brynn Hartzell took a 6-2 win in the first set and won when her opponent was forced to retire due to injury.
Goyke and Hartzell were dominant in their #1 doubles match, defeating Angela Martinez and Monica Parsons by an 8-1 score. Rachel Stoffell and Cords won at #2 doubles with an 8-5 victory.
Following those two doubles win, the Sabres never looked back as they evened their record in the NACC.
Marian will be back in action tomorrow to take on non-conference foe, Lawrence University, in Appleton at 3 p.m.
