FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University women's tennis was host to MSOE on Tuesday Sept. 16. The Sabres were tight competitors but were ultimately defeated 6-3, falling to 1-9 on the season.
The Raiders came out strong when Marly Trier and Carly Grant gave Melissa Spannbauer and Samantha Austin all they could handle in the first doubles match winning 8-1. The Sabres were able to bounce back, though, when Jenny Gapinski and Natalie Boyle returned the favor with an 8-1 victory of their own.
Melanie Avery and Brittany Kelley took the last match of doubles 8-2 over Chelsea Schoenick and Kaylyn Fischer, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
After Marly Trier and Carly Grant took the first two matches for MSOE, Sabre Gapinski gave Marian a chance at a comeback, winning 9-7 over Emily Dvorsky in a close duel.
The Sabres were unable to take advantage, though, as the Raiders took the next two matches, giving them a healthy lead.
With a victory out of reach for the Sabres, Kaylyn Fischer finished the day strong, winning the last match in two sets over Riya Chaudhari.
The Sabres look to build off some of their success as they host Alverno in a conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
