MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University women's tennis team was on the road today for Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran and Concordia Wisconsin. The Sabres were set back by the pair, falling to 1-12 on the year, 0-10 in conference play.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-6, 4-6 NACC) were first up for the Sabres. Melissa Spannbauer and Samantha Austin started doubles for the Sabres, going against the Spartan number ones, Kalyn Geddes and Paige Potaracke. The two were able to steal a few sets, but fell, 8-3.
Doubles didn't get much easier for the Sabres as there number two and number three pairs were out matched, 8-0 and 8-2.
The trend continued as the Spartans continued to have success in singles play. After losing their first five matches in singles, and with a win out of reach, junior Kaylyn Fischer finished strong for the Sabres against Emily Goetz for the Spartans. After winning the first set 6-4, Fischer was able to finish the deal, winning the second set 6-1.
The Sabres dropped thre contest, 8-1, but were hoping their late success would carry into their next match for an upset against conference-leading Concordia Wisconsin (9-1, 9-0 NACC). Despite the momentum, this was not the case.
The Falcons came out with no mercy during doubles. Despite Marian's tough effort, the falcons were able to keep the Sabres scoreless in doubles and quickly come away with a 3-0 lead.
Singles play was much of the same. It was Austin who was able to find minimal success in singles play. After losing her first set 6-2, she was able to give Emily McCormick a run for her money in the second set. Austin brought the match to extra points before McCormick ultimately prevailed, 7-5.
The next four matches were a struggle for the Sabres as the falcons were able to come away with a 9-0 victory.
With one match remaining on the season tomorrow, the Sabres look to give it all they have as they host Roosevelt University on Senior Day at Buttermilk Creek Park. The match begins at 10 a.m. and will be the final home match for seniors Samantha Austin and Natalie Boyle.
