KENOSHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University track and field team finished off the indoor season at the NACC Indoor Track and Field Championship, today. Kelly Kulinski and Kristina Samann represented the Sabres as they each participated in two events.
Kulinski got things started for the Sabres in the 55 meter dash. She finished with a time of 7.96 seconds in the preliminary round to just miss the cut for the finals. Deterrica Simpkins, of Aurora, ran a time of 7.46 seconds to win the preliminary round and an even faster time of 7.41 to win the finals.
Both Kulinski and Samann participated in the 200 meter dash as they provided each other tight competition. Kulinski finished 15th, with a time of 28.82 seconds, while Samann finished slightly behind with a time of 32.18. Once again it was Simpkins who took first, coming in at 25.98 seconds.
Samann capped off the day for the Sabres in the 400 meter dash. She was able to cut off more than half a second from her projected time as she clocked in a 1:10.96 to finish 14th. Aurora's, Loretta Johnson, sped through the dash in under a minute to land another first place finish for the Spartans.
Success was a constant for the Spartans as both their men and women took first place overall on the day. Concordia Wisconsin and Benedictine took second and third for the women, while MSOE and Concordia Wisconsin took second and third for the men.
Head coach Dan Allen worked hard all season to prepare the Sabres for today's meet and was pleased with the outcome. "I was happy with the way our women ran. We were competitive, and we had a couple of personal bests. Any time you are running your fastest at the conference championships, you know you are doing something right," said Allen. "I think that this was a great starting block for outdoors and the years to come for Marian Track and Field."
The Sabres will take a month off as they transition from indoor to outdoor track. Things will pick back up on March 27, when they compete in the Viking Olympics, in Augustana, Ill.
