ST. LOUIS - Marian University women's tennis (10-7, 6-3 NACC) defeated Fontbonne 8-1 and Westminster 7-2 to open the second half of the season.
Marian opened the Fontonne match sweeping the doubles with the duo of Alissa Heid and Mackenzie Meyers winning 8-1.
Then in singles action, Meg Hartzell, Andrea Krahenbuhl and Kristin Houle were all able to earn wins with a sweep. Heid and Mati Kissack were able to win in a tie break with Kissack taking her match 10-4.
"A big thing in the matches is that we were able to come out fast from the start," commented assistant coach Brian Ottman. "We gained confidence with the doubles wins and were able to sustain that momentum into singles. I was very proud on how hard our team was able to compete and the heart that they showed playing through some unusual circumstances."
Then against Westminster, Marian was able to sweep the doubles portion with Houle and Alyssa Ostrowski winning in a tie break.
The Sabres were then able to take No. 1, 4 and 5 singles to earn the victory. Hartzell led the way at No. 1 singles winning in a tie break, while Krahenbuhl and Houle also won in a tie break. Heid was the lone Sabre in singles action to win with a sweep.
The Sabres next travel to Chicago Saturday, April 22 to take on Lawrence and North Park.
