Box Score 3 MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Marian University women's tennis (1-2, 0-0 NACC) opened the season with three matches at the Cornell Invite.
The opener of the season saw the Sabres take on Elmhurst and fall to the Blue Jays 7-2. Both Marian victories came in singles action and needed a third-set tiebreaker.Â
Katrina Pokorny bounced back after dropping the first set 6-2 to win No. 3 singles after a 6-3 win in the second set and 10-5 tiebreak victory.Â
Brooklyn Torres earned her first collegiate singles victory dominating the first set 6-0 and the third set tiebreaker 10-6. She narrowly earned a 2-0 sweep but fell in the second set 7-5.
The Sabres bounced back later in the day to defeat Buena Vista 7-2 for the first win of the season. Marian earned wins in all three doubles matches with
Aeryn Olson and Pokorny winning 8-6 at No. 1 and
Abby Okon teaming up with Torres for an 8-6 win at No. 2.Â
Julia Loomans and
Melana Brunton won the No. 3 slot by default.
Olson and Okon led the way at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to earn sweeps for the match. Olson went 0-6, 6-2, 10-5 for her top-flight win, while Okon went 6-4, 3-6, 10-2. Loomans then earned a No. 5 singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 sweep, and Torres won the final singles slot by default.
The final match saw Marian fall to Cornell by a 9-0 final. Okon went three sets at the No. 2 singles spot but fell by a slim 10-8 final in the tiebreaker.
Marian hosts Concordia Chicago in NACC action Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. from Fond du Lac High School.
