Sabres lose program opener

(Hancock, MI) - Marian University dropped their first-ever women's hockey game played, 5-2 at Finlandia University on Saturday evening. The Lions scored three goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and move to 1-0 on the season.

Both teams recorded 25 shots in the contest, but Finlandia's Kendra Benson and Emily Marcotte provided too much scoring for Marian to overcome. Benson finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Marcotte finished with a pair of goals.

Both teams scored twice in the first period. After the Lions scored in the third and tenth minutes, Marian's Amy Knutson (Fond du Lac, WI) scored at the 14:19 mark on the power play and then Rachel Mullendore (Amery, WI) scored at the 16:04 mark to even things up.

After a scoreless second period, the Lions netted three goals in the first 10:21 of the third to pull away.

Marian's Kendra Kunkel (Schofield, WI) stopped 20 shots in the defeat.

Marian has their home-opener on Friday, as they will host Concordia College Moorhead. Action is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
