Box Score (Appleton, WI) - Marian University fell to 1-1 on Tuesday evening as they had no answer for Lawrence University's John Dekker. Dekker scored 33 points as he led the Vikings to a 77-68 non-conference victory over Marian.
The Vikings led for much of the first half and led 29-23 with 4:30 to play in the first half. Marian then went on an impressive 10-0 run to take a 33-29 lead with 2:30 to play. The Vikings were able to finish the half on a 7-2 run and took a 36-35 lead into the locker room. The Vikings shot 11-for-26 (42%) from the field in the half, while Marian shot 11-for-29 (38%). Lawrence scored 24 of their 36 first-half points from behind-the-arc.
In the second, the Vikings never trailed, but Marian tied the game at 51 with 13:30 to play. The Vikings went on a mini, 6-0 run to grab the lead again. The Sabres were never able to cut the deficit to less than four points from that point on.
Kevin Hudak (Ashwaubenon, WI) led the Sabres offense with 19 points. He was 8-for-13 from the field. He also had team highs in assists (3) and steals (2). Logan Rankin (Algoma, WI) chipped in 17 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Bryan Ashbeck (Wabeno, WI) recorded 14 points.
The Vikings had a big edge from the free-throw line as they were 23-for-31, while Marian was 10-for-16. Marian out-rebounded the Vikings 38-34.
Another key stat in the contest was Lawrence's ability to turn Marian miscues into points. They scored 21 points off of Marian turnovers.
The Sabres are back in action this weekend as they will compete in the Northwestern College Tournament. They open with Finlandia University on Friday at 3:00 PM.
