(Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University defeated Finlandia University 4-2 on Friday evening giving the Sabres their third straight victory. Marian is now 4-2 this season and 3-2 in the MCHA. The Lions fell to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the MCHA.
The Sabres came out on fire, as they scored twice in the first 7:04 of the first period. Adam Freeman (Wauwatosa, WI) scored at the 5:03 mark off assists from Ryan Hitchcock (Butte, MT) and Todd Collins (Whitby, ON). Brendan Hull (Calgary, AB) made it 2-0 with a power play goal just over two minutes later. Brendan Roberts (Calgary, AB) and Nick Henkemeyer (Prior Lake, MN) recorded assists on the play.
The Lions made it 2-1 at the 4:53 mark in the second, but Marian responded with two goals of their own. Hitchcock scored at the 6:19 mark and Zach Fray (Cambridge, ON) scored a nifty goal at the 17:20 mark off assists from Freeman and Ryan Compeau (Romeo, MI).
The Lions scored a goal in the third period, to cut the deficit to two, but Marian was able to hold on.
The Sabres had a big advantage in shots (44-25) and finished 1-for-6 on the power play.
Marian's Alex Bjerk (Roseau, MN) recorded 23 saves for the Sabres.
These two teams will finish off the series tomorrow at 4:00 PM in Fond du Lac.
