(Fond du Lac, WI) - The Marian University women's hockey program had a historic night on Friday evening as they earned their first victory of their inaugural season. Marian University defeated Finlandia University 4-2 at the Blue Line Family Ice Center. Marian is now 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
Marian was out-shot 30-21 in the contest, but scored two power play goals and will look for the sweep of the Lions tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM. The Sabres avenged an earlier season non-conference loss to the Lions with the victory.
Tara Scott (Mt. Albert, ON) gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead with just 1:23 left to play in the first period as she was assisted by Megan Sesing-Gomoll (Fond du Lac, WI). Cassy Frank (Fond du Lac, WI) scored her first collegiate goal at the 5:07 mark in the second to make it 2-0. Nicole Drews (Waupun, WI) was credited with an assist on the goal. Kiley O'Connell (New Lenox, IL) gave the Sabres a 3-0 cushion as she recorded a power play goal at the 6:54 mark in the second. The goal was the first of O'Connell's collegiate career as well. Finlandia scored a goal at the 11:32 mark to make it 3-1.
In the third, Amy Knutson (Fond du Lac, WI) scored her team-leading, fourth goal of the season on the power play at the 9:36 mark. Stephanie Desmueles (Red Lake, ON) was credited with an assist.
The Lions made it 4-2 at the 11:00 mark, but that was all the closer they would get.
