(Winona, MN) - Saint Mary's University pulled out a 3-2 non-conference victory over Marian University on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep. Both teams scored a goal in the first, but the Cardinals came out and scored two goals in the first 8:25 of the second period to secure the victory. Marian added a goal about midway through the second, but could not get back to even.
Dy-Anna Stewart scored just 1:48 into the first period to put the Cardinals up 1-0. Marian's Rachel Mullendore (Amery, WI) had a quick answer as she scored in the fifth minute off an assist from Aly Lund (Eau Claire, WI).
In the decisive second period, Madison Sienko scored a Cardinal goal at the 6:13 mark and Erin Stenseth scored at the 8:25 mark to give Saint Mary's a 3-1 lead. Marian cut into the lead at the 12:54 mark as Amy Knutson (Fond du Lac, WI) scored off an assist from Nicole Drews (Waupun, WI), but the Sabres only recorded three shots on goal in the third period and came away with the defeat.
The Cardinals out-shot Marian 47-13 in the contest. Marian was 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Cardinals were 1-for-3.
Melissa Calder (Fort Frances, ON) recorded 44 saves in the contest for Marian.
