(Fond du Lac, WI) - Gustavus Adolphus scored two goals in the third period on Sunday to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Marian University 5-3 at the Blue Line Family Ice Center. With the victory, the Golden Gusties moved to 9-3-1, while Marian fell to 5-6.
Gustavus out-shot the Sabres 37-26 in the contest and scored three times on the power play as they took advantage of Marian's ten penalties. Marian was successful on the power play as well, as they were 2-for-4.
Gustavus took a 1-0 lead 6:28 into the first period with a power play goal. Marian spent much of the first period killing penalty minutes, and trailed 2-1 at the end of the period. Marian's Tommy Fitzpatrick (Ft. McMurray, AB) scored at the 15:45 mark in the period. He was assisted by Brendan Roberts (Calgary, AB).
Trailing 2-1, Marian's Lane Boswell (Calgary, AB) scored his first goal of the year just :13 into the second period. He was assisted by Chris Thompson (Woodbury, MN). Gustavus later took a 3-2 lead with a power play goal with just :27 remaining in the period.
In the third, Marian tied it up at 3-3 as Brian Pierpont (Superior, WI) scored his first goal of the year at the 6:11 mark off assists from Adam Freeman (Wauwatosa, WI) and Nick Cinquegrani (Rolling Meadows, IL). The Gusties went on to score in the 14th and 19th minutes to take home the victory.
