(Lisle, IL) - The Sabres took a big step towards reaching their first NAC Tournament on Saturday, defeating Benedictine University 3-2 in overtime. The Sabres came away with the victory in the 97th minute to move to 7-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
Marian now sits sixth in the conference with one game left to play. With a victory against Maranatha Baptist (1-8-1 in the NAC), the Sabres will reach the postseason.
Marian struck first at the 31:53 mark as
David Reinke (McFarland, WI) found the back of the net off a pass from
Kevin Mawhinney (Waterford, WI). The Eagles answered just two minutes later and the game was tied 1-1 at the break.
In the second,
Brandon Zipperer (Green Bay, WI) put the Sabres up 2-1 in the 69th minute. Once again, the Eagles answered, as they scored with just 3:39 left to play.
Marian rebounded nicely however, as
Mario Pinto (Sheboygan, WI) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year at the 97:46 mark. It was Pinto's third game-winning goal of the year.
Benedictine out-shot the Sabres 13-10, but Marian's
Nathan Thiery (Hartford, WI) earned the victory with 5 saves.
Marian will host Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
